HOLTER MONITOR

A Holter monitor is used when Dr. Mohin is looking for abnormal heart rhythms and cardiac symptoms that may come and go throughout the day.  They want to measure the heartbeat over the course of time during normal activities.  Patients who have fast, slow or irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias may be asked to wear a Holter monitor.  The Holter monitor will determine how the heart responds to normal activity.

HOW IT IS DONE?

A trained technician at our office will attach the Holter monitor and instruct the patient on how to go about using it.  They will first attach sticky patches called electrodes to the patient’s chest, which is connected to the Holter monitor.  Once the technician attaches the electrodes the patient can carry the Holter monitor in a pocket or pouch worn around the neck or waist.  The technician will show the patient how to keep a diary of activities that were done while wearing the monitor, and symptoms they may feel.

While wearing a Holter monitor patients should:

  • Stay away from high-voltage areas, metal detectors, and large magnets
  • Do not shower or swim while wearing the monitor
  • Do not have any X-rays while wearing the monitor
